Barra de Colotepec

Just a few kilometers east of Puerto on Highway 200, the Barra de Colotepec is where the Colotepec River empties into the ocean. In the winter you can walk across the river and children go swimming here. The restaurants along the riverbank serve fish fresh from the sea. It’s also a great place for bird watching. There are sometimes turtle releases on the beach.

Manialtepec Lagoon

The 15-km lagoon is surrounded by mangroves and home to hundreds of species of birds and wildlife. You can have a leisurely lunch at the lagoon side restaurants or take an early-morning boat tour with an experienced guide. Some times of the year, the lagoon glows from the phosphorescence discharged by microorganisms in the water. Tour boats will take you out at night to swim in this magical light. The lagoon is 15 minutes from Puerto on Highway 200 going towards Acapulco.

Agua Blanca

Less than a half an hour southeast of Puerto, Agua Blanca is known for its beachfront palapas, serving fresh fish and, from November to March, lobster and oysters caught off of the rocks. Agua Blanca is suitable for surfing but not for swimming, except for some days in November and December. It is, however, a great beach for lying in the tide pools between the rocks. It’s where local families go with their small children to play in the water. Take Highway 200 to the Agua Blanca turnoff.

Roca Blanca

This large beach, around 30 minutes from Puerto, is good for bathing during the day and surfing in the late afternoon. The palapa restaurants and beach and restaurants are mainly empty except for Sundays. Take Highway 200 towards Acapulco to the Cacalote (Cacalotepec) exit. After you pass through the village, follow the dirt road for another 2 km. Turn right where the road forks.
