Julio Soto’s cover shows a part of Puerto rarely seen by tourists, the local saint’s day fiestas. For two or three days, the people of each community come together for processions, dinners, dances, fireworks, cock fights and rodeos. December has the most fiestas since Dec. 12 is the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, and Dec. 18 is the day of the Virgin de la Soledad, the patron saint of Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido. On that morning you can see the image of the Virgin being carried out to sea as far as the light house accompanied by a flotilla of fishing boats on the Bahía Principal.
November is when Puerto inaugurates the high season with the Fiestas de Noviembre. The high points include the dance festival, concerts, surfing contests, motocross and the fishing tournament.
