The map is not the territory. Julio Soto’s cover art is a fantasy of a highway that doesn’t exist, but the mountains are real. The engineers’ map is, at this stage, a fantasy of another order. If the 104-km highway from Ventanilla to Ejutla is ever completed, it will take around 40 minutes — passing through four tunnels — to travel from the Santa María Colotepec junction to the one in San Pablo Coatlán. In November, it took us over five hours in a jeep to cover that distance on existing roads.

With or without a super highway, Puerto keeps on growing. What never ceases to amaze newcomers is the international mix of globetrotters, surfers and retirees and the welcoming vibe of the community. The weather is good too.
