Santo Domingo de Morelos
DEFINITELY OFF THE BEATEN TRACK, YET THE ROAD connecting it to the Coastal Highway is well paved, Santo Domingo de Morelos, the capital of the mostly rural, Zapotec municipio, is the site of the early Sunday morning market called la plaza. It is here that local farmers bring their produce and do their shopping . But it also attracts fish mongers from Las Negras, on the shore of the Manialtepec Lagoon, and from Puerto Angel.
Gelasia Silva Cruz has been bringing fish from Las Negras to the market for 20 years.
Bordered on the south by Sta. María Tonameca and on the north by San Agustín Loxicha, the landlockedmunicipio is the largest producer of jamaica (hibiscus flowers) in Oaxaca.
It’s an hour and a half from Puerto, the turn off from the highway 200 is opposite the entrance to Escobilla.
